Tholkapiyam, one of the earliest extant works on Tamil grammar, offers valuable insights into the language, social practices, and way of life of ancient Tamils. Its third section, Porulathikaram is particularly significant for its systematic treatment of human relationships, social values, and the conventions associated with the five landscapes (திணை). Among its various dimensions, the role of the Thozhi in ‘Karpiyal’ merits particular attention. This study examines the multifaceted role of the heroine’s confidante in the life of the heroine as portrayed in the ‘Karpiyal’ section of Tholkapiyam. The Thozhi is not merely a companion but an integral figure who performs emotional, social, and mediating functions in the relationship between the hero and heroine. As a trusted confidante, mediator, and guide, she plays a significant role in resolving conflicts, facilitating communication, and sustaining harmony within the relationship. Through an analysis of the relevant grammatical and literary contexts, this study highlights the agency and significance of the Thozhi and demonstrates her important place within the social and ethical framework of ancient Tamil society.
