From the Sangam period to the present day, salt has played a significant role in the everyday lives of people. Numerous references to its importance are recorded in ancient Tamil literature. The Umanars, the traditional salt merchants, transported salt produced in the Neithal (coastal) region to various other ecological regions, thereby laying the foundation for an inland barter-based trade system. Beyond their economic role, they also fostered harmonious relationships among the people of different landscapes. Leading a largely nomadic way of life, the Umanars contributed to the practical use of salt in the daily lives of the ancient Tamils and to the cultural practices that evolved around it. Over time, salt itself became an important cultural symbol. This article aims to examine and present the significance of salt in ancient Tamil society, the labour and lifestyle of the Umanars, the relationship between salt and the Umanars, the social ties that emerged through the salt trade, and other related aspects under the title "Salt – Umanars – Relationships."
