Abstract

The Vazhuthalangunam area, located in entity Tiruvannamalai district, is an important historical site that reflects the ancient Jain heritage of Tamil Nadu. The Jain beds, natural caves, bas-relief sculpture of Adinatha, inscriptions, and natural water springs found in this region illustrate the ascetic lifestyle of Jain monks and the growth of Jainism. In particular, the stone beds carved into the rocks serve as evidence that Jain monks once resided here and practiced meditation and penance. Furthermore, inscriptions reveal that the ancient name of this place was “Mentharaiyur.” This study examines the historical background, artistic features, epigraphical significance, and archaeological importance of the Jain beds at Vazhuthalangunam. Vazhuthalangunam stands as a significant site of research for understanding the continuity and cultural richness of the Jain heritage of Tamil Nadu.
